At the invitation of Professor Bi Tianshu, executive deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Alternate Electric Power System with Renewable Energy Source (NCEPU), Dr. Du Pengwei, chief expert in new energy integration for Electric Reliability Committee of Texas, USA (ERCOT), adjunct professor of University of Texas at Austin, technical adviser of National Renewable Energy Laboratory, USA (NREL), and vice-chairman of IEEE PES Large Power Grid Planning Sub-committee paid a visit to NCEPU and made academic exchange.

Dr. Du Pengwei made an academic report entitled “Reliability and Security of Future Power Systems”. In the report, Dr. Du presented the effects of the two blackouts happening in 1996 and 2003 in the USA and the possible challenges to security and reliability of future energy field. Regarding the energy security, Dr. Du introduced the large power grid security and reliability model checking based on PMU conducted in combination with WECC and the research in power system reliability based on multi-dimensional security domain thinking. Dr. Du also introduced the development of the renewable energy in Texas and the technology and practice in the integration of renewable energy and the demand side response.

Professor Xue Ancheng presided over the report. Professor Ma Jing and Associate Professor Jia Ke from the Key Laboratory, more than 10 teachers and over 100 doctoral and master students attended the report and made in-depth discussions with Dr. Du on such issues as the influence of new energy integration on electric power system, frequency stability and demand side response, etc.

After the report, Dr. Du Pengwei visited the State Key Laboratory of Alternate Electric Power System with Renewable Energy Source (NCEPU).

ERCOT is responsible for managing the power supply to 23,000,000 customers in Texas, which accounts for 85% of the total electric power load in Texas. ERCOT is the first independent system operator (ISO) in the USA and also one the nine ISO in the North America.
