On December 18, Prof. Liu Jizhen, academician of CAE, director of the State Key Laboratory of Alternate Electrical Power System with Renewable Energy Source, made a report entitled “Energy Revolution and Re-electrification”. Professor Bi Tianshu, executive deputy director of the Laboratory and dean of the school of electrical and electronic engineering hosted the report. Over 100 students and teachers attended the report.

Prof. Liu’s report was composed of 4 parts, namely the urgency of energy revolution, the strategic goal of energy revolution in China, energy transformation and re-electrification, and the critical technological fields and study orientations. Prof. Liu pointed out that a worldwide energy revolution was arising with the utilization of the renewable energy sources at the center to confront the common problems like energy shortage, environmental pollution, and climate change. In June, 2014, General Secretary Xi Jinping put forward the important strategic thinking of “four revolutions, one cooperation” at the sixth meeting of the central leading group on financial and economic affairs, which provided the foundation for the energy transformation in China. The reports of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China stated that we should promote the energy production and consumption revolution, construct a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient modern energy system, which further clarified the direction of the energy development in the new era.

Prof. Liu made an in-depth analysis of the existing problems of the current energy and power development. He thought that re-electrification was the fundamental path for China’s energy transformation, “replacement of oil and gas with electricity” was the key to guarantee China’s energy security, the large-scale exploitation and utilization of green electricity was crucial to protect the blue sky and water, and the integration of electrification, information and intelligence was the basic feature of a new-generation energy production and consumption. In front of the new development trend, the Laboratory needs to focus on the four frontier research fields of new energy efficient transformation and power-generation characteristic, high-voltage power electromagnetic theory and advanced transmission technology, new energy power system control and optimization, and distributed energy system and power quality control.

After the report, the students and teachers and Prof. Liu made interactive discussions on the demand-side resource characteristics of the new energy power system, the large-scale stored energy and the distributed stored energy, as well as the Laboratory’s development orientation.
